Psalm 23 is, without a doubt, one of the most well-known and beloved chapters in the Bible. It has brought comfort to countless hearts throughout history, including mine. When life feels overwhelming—when everything seems to be falling apart, when I don’t know where to go or what to do, and when it feels like no one is there for me—I turn to Psalm 23. Every time I read it, peace washes over me, and my heart finds rest.
Because of how much this chapter means to me, I took the time to memorize it. Now, whenever I need to be reminded of God’s promises, I can simply recite it. Memorizing Bible verses was never something I prioritized before, mainly because I found it challenging. For a long time, I believed it was enough just to know what the Bible says, to be familiar with the promises of God within their context. However, I have come to realize that hearing the Word of God exactly as it is written—no matter the translation—is incredibly powerful.
There are moments when I don’t have a Bible with me, or times when I can’t sit down to read it. But having a few verses hidden in my heart has been a tremendous help. In difficult times, when my mind is clouded with worries, the words of Psalm 23 bring clarity and comfort. They remind me that I am never alone, that the Lord is my Shepherd, and that He will always provide, guide, and protect me.
I am not a new Christian. I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior 25 years ago, but in my heart, I believe I became a Christian even earlier than that. As far back as I can remember, I have always felt His presence within me. Over the years, my faith has been tested, but through it all, the truth of Psalm 23 has remained a source of strength and reassurance.
If you have never taken the time to meditate on this chapter, I encourage you to do so. Let its words sink into your soul. Memorize it if you can, so that in your darkest moments, you will have a wellspring of divine truth ready to uplift you.
Here is Psalm 23 in the New Living Translation. May it bring you the same peace and encouragement it has given me:
The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for You are close beside me. Your rod and Your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely Your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
