Lottery Is Not A Sin
Philippine lotto 6/49 now reached 200 million. To bet or not to bet, this maybe in the thoughts of many who haven’t resolved whether betting in the lottery is a sin. Whether is it ethical or not, although, the question of ethics may not always be related to sin. To some it is also a moral question.
“Playing the Lottery itself is not really a sin, but the intent behind it can make it a sin. If you play for some fun, then it's okay. If you play to become a millionaire and spend the money on foolish material things, it is a sin. If you play to win millions of dollars and help spread God's glory, then do continue!” I found this from yahooanswer addressed to someone asking whether betting in the lottery is a sin. I reminded me of another reply regarding masturbation whether it is a sin. Someone replied that it is not as long as you are not lusting when you did it. He said he can do it (or did it) without lusting.
As far as I can understand, if a person’s heart is right with God, he wouldn’t play in the lottery to win millions to help spread God’s glory. Give that responsibility to those Christians who already have millions in their hands. God might have something special specifically for you to do.
If a person play lottery for fun, where’s the fun? Is it fun to loose money even in small amounts? Would you have the same feeling loosing them by giving it to the children and beggars in the streets? The fun is in the excitement of winning. Winning is still the intent of playing lottery. Why do you want to win? Check your heart.
I can find reasons not to bet in the lottery without questioning my intent but as I said earlier, that is only based on my own understanding. I would also like to end this article by saying; you cannot really put God in A box. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 (New International Version)
For the time being, I don’t have the full knowledge of God’s ways and His thoughts. I cannot say that I will not believe if someone will say to me that God said to him in a dream to play in the lottery to win millions of dollars and use the money to spread the good news of salvation.
